He was making the (weird) point that Hindu's are not imperialistic. Even at their worst they would only kill the people they didn't like in India.

They aren't there yet, and won't be for years, but that's the direction they are headed. Militant religious nationalism, is replacing the Gandhian secular pacifism which dominated Indian politics and thought for the first 40 years after independance. Who won the last election? Why do you think that happened?
