It is not at all clear that there is a good rationale for progressivity in a situation where one is being taxed by percentages. Inevitably, the rich will pay more, because they have a higher income. The only justification for progressivity is to relieve the "not rich" from paying at the same rate as the rich. Whether or not it is a sufficient rationale, there is no magic figure that is "fair", it is primarily a policy matter. Class warfare rhetoric is wholly misplaced, insofar as the rate on the "not rich" is not only not increased, but is itself reduced.......

"As I pointed out: after the recent Bush-era tax changes, there is likely to be no effective spread at all anymore..."

This is a lie or a reflection of your stupidity. The rich make more money and pay a higher percentage. Since your reasoning power is 0, and you tar great Americans like Reagan as traitors to our country, there is no real point discussing it. Feel free to try to support your statement if you like, but it is unsubstantiated crap at this point. As I said in the original post, we made far less in 2002 than in 2001, and I confirmed personally that when you make less, you pay a lower percentage.

"Considering that many of the OTHER taxes people pay (such as consumption taxes, user fees, FICA, etc.) take an even bigger bite out of the average Joe's income than income taxes do... it is clear that the Middle Class is the Beast of Burden here"

But we are talking about income taxes, aren't we? If you don't like the local taxes, move to a more conservative area. The liberal areas are taxing folks to death, I will agree. FICA is a forced retirement program isn't it? You libs love that tax (although I am sure you want someone else to pay yours).

America is a bargain for anyone earning less than $100,000 per year. You should respect the ones that make more and pay the lion's share instead of villifying them. It is like bin laden villifying us. When you attack people that are more honest, harder working and smarter than you, you will usually lose. Try attacking dishonest folks, instead of being dishonest yourself. Your strategy will fail.

"I can think of nothing that would ignite one faster than your call to "rob the Middle Classes"

I'm in the middle class you idiot! And as I have stated, I am proud to live here, and think I am getting a bargain.
