Kinda shoots down the argument that people in India are looking forward to slaughtering Muslims, I agree. The president of India may be a Muslim but the presidency of India is a largely ceremonial position, and is not directly voted on by the Indian people. If the parliamentary majority party has any competence at all, and the BJP does, their man will be president. There's great question in my mind if the present President of India has much in the way of political competence. I think he was put there by the BJP because he's Muslim and basically inoffensive from their point of view. The back rooms of the BJP have some very nasty people proposing dreadful things. If the Indian middle class makes the devil's pact the German one did sixty years ago, then the scenario Jacob fears may be acted out. So far, the middle class in India, generally has not not bought the message (although recent Gujurat events and election results make me wonder). The scapegoating of Muslims by the fringe and not so fringe elements of the BJP is well developed and bears enormous similarity to that done to Jews by the Nazis. The hindutva ideology (like any fascism) sees the state as an organism which, like any creature may be infected, and of course, the Muslims (and Christians) are the infection. The schemes the proponents of the ideology propose are depressingly familiar: forced conversion and migration, genocide. Unfortunately, the islamofascism so present in Pakistan gives the hindufascists lots of material to work on. A cynic, such as myself, would say they are trying to make India a mirror image of Pakistan. dissidentvoice.org sscnet.ucla.edu members.tripod.com server1.msn.co.in atimes.com
