Gimme a break. When WW2 started the French were thoroughly prepared to fight WW1. The problem was that the Germans didn't fight WW1; they fought WW2. Remember the Maginot Line?

"Fixed fortifications are momuments to the stupidity of man." - General George Patton

France lost a whole generation of young men during the first world war.
And, of course, the Germans lost nobody, right? Their only ally (other than Turkey) was the Austro-Hungarian Empire. That's like having Italy on you're side (which they were unlucky enough to have in WW2). They fought against the FRENCH, the BRITISH, the RUSSIANS, and the AMERICANS.

And you want to tell time the French has it bad.

Yeah, war is hell for the French. They keep losing.
