"Bin Laden says he is Iraqi partner - Powell
11/02/2003 - 4:45:00 pm

US Secretary of State Colin Powell warned today that what appears to be a new threat, from Osama bin Laden shows why the world needs to be concerned about Iraqi ties to terrorism.

Powell said he read a transcript of “what bin Laden – or who we believe to be bin Laden” will be saying on the Al-Jazeera Arab satellite station later today, “where once again he speaks to the people of Iraq and talks about their struggle and how he is in partnership with Iraq.”

“This nexus between terrorists and states that are developing weapons of mass destruction can no longer be looked away from and ignored,” Powell told the Senate Budget Committee.

In Cairo, Al-Jazeera chief editor Ibrahim Hilal said his station had no such tape of bin Laden."

Al-Jazeera denies Powell claim of new bin Laden tape

Doha, Qatar-AP -- It has aired several purported tapes of Osama bin Laden -- but Al Jazeera says it doesn't have a new one.

The Arab satellite station is denying it will air a new tape of bin Laden speaking to the Iraqi people.

Secretary of State Colin Powell told a Senate panel today that the station would be showing a statement from a man the U-S believes is the terror leader.

Powell said he read a transcript showing that bin Laden would say he's in "partnership with Iraq."

Powell told the Senate Budget Committee the tape shows why the world should be worried about Iraq's ties to terror.
