Zonder is happy to surmise that Unocal has a fait accompli gas pipeline deal that is undisclosed, yet refuses to make a similar logic-leap to scorn Iraq's claim that it does not have WMDs.

Let me tell you a little story:

A woman acquaintance of mine is this millionnaire singer in her early 40s, who recently trapped a dazzlingly handsome guy in his early thirties, who happens to be the brother of a girlfriend. Paparazzis had one photo and it was all over the papers that they would get married. She denied it vehemently, saying she is a woman with a young child who is negatively affected by all this publicity, and that the papers should be more responsible in their "vicious slander".

Less than a month later, they are now married. The guy's mother had a nervous breakdown, shortly after she stormed into the wedding ceremony and threw a glass of red wine on the bride's dress :-)

Moral of the story: People can deny stories in the press until they sign the contract.
