Runes - You have quite a few baseless assumptions here that come from media hype rather than any analytical process.

Sadam 1) has a pathological addiction to the concept that he never backs down

What "pathological addiction" are you talking about and how do you come to that conclusion?

2) has a psychological addition to WMD (it makes him bigger and badder than he really is)

This is really quite interesting. I would love to hear how you arrived at the diagnosis of "psychological addiction to WMDs", and especially the explanation at the end.

I hope you can see without me pointing out that these are stereotypes of madman that the media is portraying Saddam as. On the other hand, none of his actions or words have shown any such psychological disorder that I am aware of.

So, as a practical matter, offering Sadam financial carrots won't work.

Quite the contrary, Saddam has shown time and again that he values his skin and the survival of his regime just as much as any of us value our own lives and accomplishments. As much as we find his methods distasteful, he is not suicidal and can hence be cajoled into non-aggression.

Believe it or not, all leaders think of their strategies in terms of risks and benefits. All, accept Bush Jr, it seems, who can only talk about good and evil.

I agree completely with Sun Tzu on this subject, and would be just as interested to hear an analysis of how and why it is in the interest of the American nation to invade Iraq at this point in time.
