There is much work on self awareness. Some of the early work was done by someone named Rosenberg in the late 60s or early 70s. I don't have the research on hand. The implicit test is to look for earliest memories. Infants can pick up all sort of learned behavior, but do not form consciece memories until there is a consciousness to tie them to.
