It doesn't matter whether the head of a personality cult is nominally Muslim, or Christian, or atheist, or Hindu, or whatever. The point is that these cults all revolve around the virtual worship of the central figure-head. Once you realize this, you'll know why democracy and the free market of ideas are the two biggest threats to these cults.

I really think you're mixing things up. Religious ideologues tend be different from dictators; they are more charismatic and have a more of a world view. Saddam looks at the surrounding ME for his targets; OBL looks to all of Islam. Saddam is a pig and wants money; OBL wants to change the world order. Both don't care what they do to get what they want but IMO OBL presents the most serious danger to the US.

But what does it matter at this point......serious damage has been done to the order of things. It would best if you all are right and I am wrong.

Picking up where we left off this afternoon, I listened to the news on the BBC tonite as well as NBC. Its seems to me that the Europeans are more concerned about terrorism and terrorists like Hamas or al Qaeda rather than Saddam......and because of their sizeable Muslim populations feel that deposing of Saddam will cause them significant problems.

In fact, they seem perplexed by Bush's focus on Saddam. The BBC also pointed out that in spite of the positions of some European leaders, the vast majority of Europeans are not in favor of attacking Iraq........which we already know from the latest poll. They also feel that Bush, Powell, Rumsfield et al failed to make a case for going after Saddam. And they also feel that the Bush administration has made little effort to bridge the gap between the two sides.

Back on NBC, they had a former CIA director on the news. And frankly, I don't know whether he was director under a dem. or rep. administration, and I don't care. He said a number of things that were good but at the end, he made what I think was his most important comment. He said the war on terrorism is a complicated one that will require a lot of diligent effort and cooperation between countries. That's why he thinks it's important that we not try to do it on our own.....that we need the help of our allies.

After listening to the two broadcasts, I think we definitely are seeing a huge failure in international diplomacy, and that our gov't should sit down with the Europeans asap and try to work things out.......come to some agreement that satisfies both sides.

EDIT. I don't know if this is well known but DC insiders claim the war is start at the end of the month.
