HP Targets Dell, Lexmark In Printer Battle
HP VP says 'Dellmark' is enemy No. 1

HP Targets Dell, Lexmark In Printer Battle

The vice president of Hewlett Packard's U.S. printing and imaging business Tuesday rallied more than 1,000 HP partners to work with HP to battle Dell and Lexmark, referring to the two companies as "Dellmark."

Rich Raimondi, vice president of the U.S. Commercial Business Imaging and Printing Group, told partners here at HP's Partners In Motion conference that Dell and Lexmark are "enemy No. 1."

"We like to call it 'Dellmark,' " said Raimondi, backed up by a large slide listing both Dell and Lexmark with a slash through the two brands. "They are competitors. Lexmark made a choice. They decided to OEM product and cartridges to Dell. They placed their bet, and now it is up to us to make them pay for it."

Raimondi's comments come with Dell slated to launch in the next several months what is expected to be an aggressively priced line of printers with the Dell label but manufactured by Lexmark, which is a strong partner of many solution providers.

Raimondi promised that HP will be "as aggressive on price as we need to" both before Dell's announcement and "in response" to the Dell launch. "We are going to work very aggressively as they go into the market to block them," said Raimondi.

HP, in fact, is preparing to launch what it is calling Chapter 2 in its imaging and printing solutions strategy, which includes plans for a new certification program for partners selling imaging and printing solutions.

Raimondi said there are huge opportunities for solution providers partnering with HP in such areas as digital imaging, digital publishing and convergence, with tighter integration between HP digital cameras and printers. "We want and need new partners to take advantage of these opportunities," said Raimondi, noting that HP continues to see double-digit growth in the imaging and printing segment.

Geoffrey Lilien, president of Lilien Systems, a Mill Valley, Calif., HP enterprise partner, said he was not concerned about Dell's entry into the market and is looking at new HP printer and imaging opportunities. "I don't think Dell is going to be real successful at it," he said.

Raimondi urged HP partners to "bust Dell" in a humorous jab referencing the arrest on Monday of Dell "Dude" pitchman and actor Benjamin Curtis for alleged pot possession.
