Roh Defensive About Future of US Troops

President-elect Roh Moo-hyun is being put on the defensive in the face of an onslaught by the opposition Grand National Party (GNP) over strained South Korea-U.S. relations in general and, particularly, the future of U.S. troops stationed here.

Pointing to reports about U.S. intention to withdraw its troops from Korea, GNP Secretary-General Kim Young-iel attacked the incoming administration for its alleged lack of diplomatic skill.

"Roh's senior delegation's visit to United States only deepened the discord between the two countries and caused misunderstanding on the future of U.S. troops here," Kim said. "The mission proved to harm rather than help the two countries relations. He attributed its failure to the lack of experience of the delegates as well as their ideological tendencies.

GNP Spokesman Park Jong-hee said in a commentary, "The incoming administration has failed to recognize the gravity of the situation, and called on the president-elect to make clear his administration's opposition to the withdrawal of American troops." [...]

Moody's Downgrades SK Economic Outlook Amid Security Concerns

North Korea's nuclear threats have finally taken their toll on South Korea's creditworthiness with Moody's Investors Service yesterday downgrading the country's long-term outlook from positive to negative.

"Increased uncertainty regarding North Korean actions and possible responses from the international community have reduced the likelihood that South Korea's ratings could move up in the near future, Moody's sovereign risk unit managing director Vincent J. Truglia said. [...]
