what's the best strategy to get as many allies as we can, win the war, and rebuild Iraq afterwards?

Friedman is one of those that just doesn't "Get it." We are having a "Sea Change" in our relationships, and a lot of things we did in the past are not going to be done in the future.

First off, don't assume that any "Rebuilding" is going to be needed. I expect that the main things destroyed will be Military sites that don't need to be rebuilt.

Second, let the Iraqis rebuild. They are the ones who put up with this Dictator, why are we expected to treat them like little children that need a Mommy and Daddy to take care of them?

Third, we ran a Military Government in Japan without any help, why do we need it now? Let the Euros who oppose us come, hat in hand, if they want to be involved. The countries that do help us during the occupation will be all we need.

Finally the strategy we are using is the best to get allies and win the war. If they don't want to come along with what is evident now, the hell with them. We certainly don't need Germany or France to help win the war. They would be a hindrance if they were involved.

So the question remains - what's the best strategy to get as many allies as we can, win the war, and rebuild Iraq afterwards?

Most sensible article I've seen in awhile, Nadine. Thanks.

As for your questions,

1) Stop honking them off...if all your best friends told you that you were screwing up, wouldn't you listen? Wouldn't hurt to muzzle Rummy, either
2) We can handle this part just fine
3) Much time and money. Iraq has a long history of being rebuilt:

I have a hard time reconciling Friedman's Sunday column with the one you posted.
