I was lucky and got in in the middle of the telecom boom.....really really really good money in it for a short period of time. It was enough to set the stage for the rest of my working life, and that was at somewhat of a low level position. I'm not condoning switching to the hot sector mid career, but it worked for me. Sometimes even the crumbs are enough to make a living off of. Also, figure after the RE market bombs out, if it ever does, all of those people can go into credit collection for a few years and make a bundle there.
