LB,"Isolationism"
If the war on terror is not deemed successful in a couple of years, or the war in iraq goes very badly, dont be surprised to see Son of Buchanan heading a third party or taking over one of the two majors. Current history has america swinging from isolationism to internationalism. No reason that it cant go back. Both part of the same impulses toward the rest of the world--a desire to make the world better and a desire to stay out of the worlds problems. Isolationists in my imaginary scenario would demand expulsion of all moslem non citizens on one hand and would enter into a quid quo pro with al quaida that america will be off limits for terrorism and the US will pick up its military marbles around the world. That would leave us with the Americas and some special countries--england, iberian nations, phillipines etc. That would leave China to dominate asia, Europe an uncertain fate, and Bin Laden as head of ME and beyond, with Israel ultimately left out in the cold(a Buchanan wish anyway). Bin Laden could always get to the US later on. Again this will only happen if the War in iraq goes terribly bad or the War on Terror is perceived as a failure. mike

What Europe is facing is a new world order in which America does things without paying much attention to what France and Germany want.

Yep. The Cold War conditioning is wearing off. We woke up after 9/11. France and Germany are crapping themselves because we aren't subsuming our national interest to theirs anymore. They got used to having more influence than their position warranted, and now its reevaluation time.
