I don't think advertising imposes "goodwill". It does impose brand identity. Given that most consumer computer users are between ages 13-45, and a good proportion of them smoke weed, or know people who smoke weed, I don't think they will view this as a negative.
I do agree with you on the second half of your statement, however, and I do think that Dell is due to have a comeuppance. I just don't think having a spokesperson jailed for weed is the issue to do it.
