Very interesting internal NASA email from January 28 (four days before Columbia crash). Scroll down to the last email in the link (the one that is a couple of pages long). Sure sounds like somebody was worried about a part of the spacecraft failing and the astronauts becoming toast..... and that same part of the spacecraft appears to be what failed.
