This is a little off from the topic of the demands of Empire... and the 'inevitable' rise-rule-fall cycles of Empire but, Ok: Re: "The founding fathers wisely chose not the make the US a pure democracy..." >>> What does this say about Empire? Rome too, was not a Grecian-style Democracy... and we are not the modern 'electronic Democracy' we could become if we wished it. Re: "and the war on terrorism is to make our own borders safe....." >>> Again: so? Isn't the important question there how to 'win' such an asymetrical war... without shooting ourselves in the foot and igniting long-term opposition to our national goals, a twilight 'forever war'? >>> Do all Empires invite sniping at the under-belly from those outside the Empire?
