Of course everyone knows the Dems guard the so-called "payroll" tax with their lives. It's FICA, aka Social Security and Medicare. Repubs would love to cut it, but Dems won't hear of it.

The unfair tax is the progressive income tax, which contributes the majority of the revenue to government. That's what gets tinkered with each time a politician sells out.

here's a useful study on effective tax rates from the CBO:
cbo.gov

When one considers payroll taxes, the tax code isn't very progressive at all.

And if one considers the amount of taxes one pays based on the amount of wealth they own, the tax code is actually regressive.

It continues to amaze me the Republicans say "you can't get a tax cut if you don't pay taxes" yet they refuse to cut payroll taxes which are paid by everyone who works and then eliminate the estate tax which is paid by virtually no one.

Very nice tax study, thanks.

Too bad the figures are only up-to-date for 1997 (significant tax changes since then have made this obsolete)... and it excludes other federal taxes, state and local taxes, and estate and gift taxes.
