if your understanding is correct, a drop in royalties from about $11.15 (=$725/65 for FY02) to $7.85 (=$212/27 for F1Q03) per handset is alarming.

I think the denominator that you need to use for the first number is 80 million units. This is the (approximate) number of handsets that were shipped during FY02.

That works out to $9.06/handset for FY02 vs. $7.85 during the most recent quarter. Some of the $1.21 drop is due to the drop in ASP's (about 50 cents).....and the rest might be due to various shifts in marketshare or possibly an overly conservative estimate since they had already soundly beat their earnings guidance.
