L'operazione è valutata a 21,7 milioni di dollari in contanti. I portavoce di Symantec confermano che le trattative sono in corso e dichiarano che una eventuale acquisizione le darebbe un maggior controllo sui prodotti e migliori margini operativi. Se ancora non c'è stato un annuncio ufficiale è perché in realtà il prezzo non è stato definito. A conclusione dell'operazione Symantec si ritroverà con una trentina di nuovi dipendenti dalla sede Nexland di Miami e un linea di prodotti di firewall e Vpn. Secondo Gregory Levine, attuale Ad di Nexland, oltre la metà del fatturato dell'ultimo quarto di questa azienda è legata agli accordi Oem con Symantec. Nexland, precisa Levine "è una compagnia di ingegnerizzazione più che commerciale." Lo scorso settembre, il Ceo Symantec, John Thompson, aveva dichiarato di non prevedere alcun tipo di acquisizione per l'immediato futuro. Nel trimestre chiuso lo scorso dicembre la divisione firewall/Vpn è cresciuta del 49% rispetto allo stesso periodo 2001 e per Symantec l'obiettivo resta quello di stimolare le attività della divisione enterprise. Uno dei brevetti più importanti di Nexland è una tecnologia che consente di implementare, attraverso un dispositivo Nat, un flusso di molteplici “tunnel” Vpn IpSec. La Network Address Translation maschera gli indirizzi Ip dei computer di una Lan dalla rete esterna, fatto che può avere dei vantaggi ma che rende molto complicato identificare la corretta destinazione del traffico Vpn che scorre attraverso un dispositivo Nat, per esempio un router. Oggi una soluzione di questo problema consiste nell'incapsulare i pacchetti IpSec in messaggi Udp, ma Levine sostiene che l'idea sviluppata da Nexland è molto più elegante. A parte tutto questo, l'acquisto di Nexland che ha utile di oltre mezzo milione di dollari su un fatturato di 3,2 milioni, può essere giustificato finanziariamente.
