Russia (an old ally of Serbia) would have vetoed any UNSC resolution, so the Kosovo operation was done as a NATO affair. Clinton or even Bush I should have stepped in years before, while Sarajevo was being destroyed, but the Europeans were shouting, "we can handle it!". But they couldn't. They just wrung their hands and watched. So finally we stepped in to stop Milosevic's fourth war.

Bombing Belgrade wasn't defensive either, since Serbia wasn't attacking a member of NATO. But the same people who oppose Iraq today were all for Kosovo.

I can only conclude that they feel pictures of refugees on CNN fleeing right this minute are the only justifiable reason for military intervention. Never mind what the regime has already done, or tried to do, or can confidently be expected to do in the future. Oh, and there must be no oil involved.
