Hi carranza2; Re: "The US has masterfully divided the old Europe from the New Europe, which is pro-American."

France, Germany and Belgium, together have a population of about 150 million. Of the US allies against Iraq, only Britain has provided any significant force, and they're only 59 million in size. Most of the rest of Europe is (quite rationally) keeping their heads low.

In addition to the population (and GDP and military power) imbalance, public opinion in Britain matches "old Europe's" foreign policy, not that of Britain itself. The rest of "new Europe" consists of shitty little countries that are worse than worthless as allies, as history proves over and over (except some of them, and then only when they're defending their own territory).

I mean Jesus weeps! Now that Italy is making fairly mild noises in favor of the US, the same conservatives who ran down Italy's martial abilities in off the cuff posts two years ago, are now going on and on about how weak and useless France is. Funny that they're not saying the same thing about Germany or Russia.

We once led a full and united NATO. Now Bush's insane foreign policy screwups are breaking NATO in two. This is not an improvement in our diplomatic, military or economic situation. It's a f'ing disaster. This is amateur hour at the White House.
