c2,

I just listened to a bit of Rush Limbaugh. He is now on a mission against the French and the UN (and Bill Clinton but that got tedious years ago). This is a good indicator of how the US right will react. The French / US relationship has been seriously damaged. There is no short term path to recovery. I think the French purposely put Bush in a box today. The only way for the French and the UN to remain relevant is for Bush to back down. There is no other winning outcome for them. So, they are working hard to force Bush to back down. It is a diplomatic Hail Mary pass. It won't work directly on Bush but I am concerned about Britain. Jack Straw was nowhere near a solid as Powell. If Blair needs to back down then the French/UN might prevail. Blair's domestic political problems are the weakest link and that is where the 'paperwork not peace' crowd is applying all the pressure.

Paul

France laughed upon and ignored by Americans, yes, not the rest of the world. Let me remind you of Giscard d'Estaing, then president words on the Egyptian Israeli peace deal under Carter's wings :
"A peace that is not French is not a peace."
He later, much later, admitted to his mistake.
Appaling still.
