Own, I am curious about the oobserving resources that are dedicated to such an event. I would hope that such a relatively rare occasion as known re-entry over US soil of a ballistic body would be anticipated and observer with everything we had. Now how many of these are MIL assets and not for our common eyes, that is the question.
In addition, plasmas are bulk emitters and a black body is a surface emitter only and the plasma spreads downpath is larger. Interestingly that Air Force photo showed a blurred inverted video black silhoutte(where it normally would have been glowing red-white), indeed with a few extra black pixels showing extra heat from the left wing zone. That image looked as if it had been extracted from a plasma blob.
It is a challenge.
