If you want to keep score, Americans have always lost much fewer lives than the other side in wars not on American soil. Even "Black Hawk Down" was terribly lopsided in favor of Americans, though we mourn more for the handful of Americans killed than the thousand or so Somalis who got killed too.

The difference is that Americans are much, much more sensitive to casualties than our enemies. That might be the "hometown advantage" you are talking about, i.e. the tolerance of heavy casualties when the war is on your home turf. That includes 9/11 and the few months that followed.
