Who said he would run as a Republican?
The gap between Powell and the Dems is more easily breached.

We are at that special time in history where Party dosen't matter.

We don't want the Party for the Job.
We want the man for the job.

semi-OT re: President Powell:

What fraction of U.S. voters knows, or cares, what his domestic policy is? 2%? 5%? And if we are still losing the War On Terror a year from now, that % doesn't change. He has Character, and that is far more important than his (future) position papers on abortion or the death penalty. I'd make a bet that foreign, not domestic issues, dominate the next election.

Here's a proposal for Campaign Reform:

Candidates must announce their candidacy at least a year before the election. When they announce, there is a Ceremony of Golden Silence, where the candidate's mouth is firmly covered with duct tape. Maybe hold a lottery, to see who gets the honor of doing the taping. I'd buy a few tickets, and I have several rolls of duct tape I could spare for this noble purpose. Tape removed when a winner is declared, which ought to provide a disincentive to arguing over hanging chads.
