How about 12 to 18 months max. (from March through October of the same year plus maybe 3 to 6 months of the following season)... assuming you are successful. after that... obsolete. (unless you are a collector)

Winters are spent testing tires, new cars, chassis modifications and other things, in Italy, (Fiorano) France, (Paul Ricard) and Spain (Valencia - Barcelona)

if you are not successful... (i.e. not finishing inside podium placing --1st, 2nd, or 3rd) in the first three or four races (about March through April)... continuous development changing areofoils, wings, areodynamics, suspension, chassis, motor.... you name it.

even the successful teams continue to develop the cars striving for that extra speed that will shave .001 of a second in a given lap time -gg

and the budgets... well, let's see....

Toyota have high expectations of their time in F1, and with a reputed £150m (*) to spend a year, have one of the biggest budgets in the sport.

and that does not count support and research given to teams by tire companies (two Bridgestone and Michelin)

motor manufacturers (BMW, Honda, Cosworth, Ford,)

Jaguart, Renault & Ferrari have their own teams and do not sell their motors

(*) 150 M Sterling is about 248 M USD roughly

big $$ in F-1
