Ovation for Schroeder as he grasps the chance for peace

"We can disarm Iraq without war" ...Chancellor Schroeder.

The German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, said yesterday a peaceful resolution of the Iraq crisis was still possible and that he would fight for it alongside France, Russia and other countries.

"We can disarm Iraq without war. I see grasping this chance as my responsibility," Mr Schroeder told the MPs in a passionate speech that drew a standing ovation. He said a majority of the United Nations Security Council backed his view.

"We are ... fulfilling our duties for peace and the peaceful disarmament of Iraq. Together with France, Russia and other partners the Government is doing all it can for a peaceful resolution. That is possible and we are fighting for that."

Mr Schroeder made it clear that Turkey could rely on Germany's military support if it were attacked.

But he ruled out any possibility that a NATO dispute over the appropriate time to start planning to protect Turkey in an Iraq war would be solved before today's meeting of the Security Council.

France, Germany and Belgium have blocked US proposals for the 19-nation alliance to start planning to send Patriot missiles, early warning planes and anti-chemical and biological warfare units to Turkey.

They have argued that starting defence planning now would lock NATO into a "logic of war".

Mr Schroeder rejected criticism from opposition leaders in Germany that he is isolating Germany and ruining relations with the United States.
