Everywhere i go with a skinny little swiss army knife - screwdriver, bottle opener, corkscrew, toothpick, tweezers, one blade ... light, effective, high quality, i am never without one of these, can't imagine how man survived all these millennia without them ... it feels like being disrobed to have to put it in checked luggage, and worse than that, it takes about an extra hour minimum per trip, because i never used to check any luggage, i've always travelled light, got one of those tough little nylon packs that is sized to go overhead as long as you don't overly stuff it .... the little daypack zips onto it for hiking, on the plane it becomes my 'purse' and not luggage, so the piece count doesn't go over .... can't do this any more, because of my s.a.k., even internally here in the g.w.n. ... huge amounts of time wasted, waiting for stuff to show up on those carousels, and i don't trust them either, one day they'll lose stuff, you just know that

There are some kiwis around here, when one goes downunder he brings back Vegemite, which costs about cdn4.00 here for a tiny jar that makes maybe two sandwiches, ridiculous price ... an aussie friend just brought back a few jars ten times the size, bought them for aus2.70 each in Sydney ... well on getting back and unpacking these, he discovered that for the entire round trip he'd had in his carry-on bag a german paring knife in a little scabbard ... thin little thing almost like a fish filleting knife, high quality, totally effective, he would have landed in jail if they'd found it .. but they didn't, even though it was in a pocket right inside the top of the bag ... and this was going both ways through LAX, from where most NA-Downunder flights leave

So much paranoia around .... you look at the numbers there, in the attacks on the WTC and Pentagon there were around three thousands killed .... that's roughly the number killed in motor vehicle accidents in the US in the average month, is it not

Nothing specific to one nation about it either - of those three thousands many were from about eighty other nations, since New York is such an international city ... you'd think that logically the reaction would be other than Go Directly To Xenophobia, Do Not Pass Thoughtfulness .... too much of the reaction glorifies terrorism imho, it should be more of a police matter ... by all means act against it effectively, but do not hand these common criminals the martyrdom they seek

There's more than a little political usefulness in a state of perma-war, maybe eh
