Bad Tip May Have Helped Boost Alert

Orange alert to remain for now, Ridge says

WASHINGTON – Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Friday the nation will remain on orange alert for the time being even as he sought to calm a jittery citizenry and prevent a run on duct tape at the nation's hardware stores.

"I want to make something very, very clear at this point. We do not want individuals or families to start sealing their doors or their windows," Ridge said with a half smile as he briefed reporters at his department's new headquarters. Duct tape and plastic were among the items Ridge mentioned last week as things that should be included in an emergency kit citizens should assemble to protect themselves in the event of an attack.

If bad tips caused the alert, why not lower the threat level now?

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.
