Was it one of the classic hookahs or was it really a "bong"?

I don't know what it was. I'm not up on such things and I was sloppy with my terminology. It was big and colorful and elaborate and smelly, not unpleasantly smelly, but slightly irritating to the eyes. There were several of them on shelves up front, the only decoration in the place. The tables and chairs and the rest of the decor looked more like a stripped down Japanese restaurant--light wood, simple design, uncomfortable chairs.

Sounds like it might have been an Al Qaeda hangout.

Hard to imagine that. It was a storefront with big windows, tucked into a shopping center between an Einstein's Bagels and a Sally Beauty. Besides, if the owners were that committed, they would have been at Friday prayers rather than open for lunch, I would think. I didn't feel at all uncomfortable. I am used to going into all sorts of unusual ethnic restaurants. My sense was, however, that they were taken aback by our presence for some reason. Sometimes those places don't have servers who speak English and are used to patrons from their own community but there was no language problem here. Like I said, I didn't feel uncomfortable, but the experience--the juxtaposition--was surreal. OTOH, I tend to be friendly and trusting and assume the best about everyone who doesn't give me a clear reason to be suspicious.

Food was good, and quite inexpensive--although the menu was less interesting than I had hoped. I don't expect to go back. There are just too many other choices around here.
