When I did my backpacking tours in Europe I always made sure to wear a Canadian flag. The anti-American feeling is nothing new in France. My first time in Paris a French man came up to me on the street and asked "Do you speak English", when I answer "Yes" he responsded "Well Fuck You Then" and stormed away. I was a little puzzled. My more recent trips to Paris and France were much more pleasant, there was a notable increase in the quality of service in Paris.

I don't care to go to France, but Americans who do travel abroad should treat the locals with respect -- and they should expect the same in return.

My town has a huge tourist economy. Some days have five or six huge cruise ships all disgorging passengers directly on the city streets. Most of them are quite polite, but there are so many it is overwhelming at times. Most locals won't go downtown when the cruise ships are in. I don't feel that way myself. I feel a responsibility towards them as a host citizen. The crew, most of whom are Filipino, do a great deal of business in Juneau because it's the easiest place on their route to get to Costco and Kmart.
