Benjamin Franklin wrote about the French young men clamoring to join up with the fledgling American army. They expected, and a few received, high officer's rank for the privilege. Lafayette was a fighter, young as he was. I've seen the big sycamore tree at Brandywine where he laid wounded. And the cannon that he himself confirmed, years after the war, was the one used there.

What do you suppose is the difference between those young men of the eighteenth century and the demonstrators in France, London, and Washington?
