What is objectionable in Fisk's account, here and elsewhere, that he believes in Western guilt not merely as a mitigating circumstance for Eastern behavior, but as wholy absolving the Afghans (or the Palestinians in many other columns) from any responsibility for their own choices of behavior. What could be more condescending or racist than that? "It's all our fault; mustn't blame them; they can't help themselves"

Re-read his account and tell me if he's being attacked as "the enemy" or just being robbed and beaten as a vulnerable stranger. What exactly is this Western guilt supposed to be for, anyway? we who had armed their struggle against the Russians and ignored their pain and laughed at their civil war Who laughed at their civil war? Did we make them have a civil war? Didn't they manage that all on their own? We armed them against the Russians; do you suppose they regard that as a grievance?

Every time you try to examine Fisk's reasoning, it all evaporates like a puff of smoke. That's why they call it "Fisking".
