there were times when the Vietnam war was unpopular in the US. The US govt went ahead. Where did it end ?

My view is the govt is representative of the people and for the people. If there is a divergence, shit happens.

That's why the US is set up as a democratic constitutional republic, rather than a true democracy. And that's why it endures.

No, we don't think all votes are made equal, they have to fit inside the framework that the founders set up. Good thing, too. A majority of the population believes that Elvis is alive, and that aliens take humans into their space ships and experiment on them. The average IQ is 100. And the average IQ of a lynch mob is far lower.
