"Democracy" is direct rule of the people. Those holding the franchise vote for everything. A "republic" is where the people vote for individuals, or a political party, that will represent them in the government and debate and decide issues on their behalf.

So, for example, Athens (IIRC) was a strict democracy since all the land owning males (who were the only ones that held the franchise) debated and decided matters collectively. Whereas the US is a Republic, because we elect others to be our executive officers and law makers to represent us.
