We all heard this one about "If you are young and not a liberal, you have no heart – and, if you are older and not a conservative, you have no mind". I think I paraphrased it, but that's OK. The interesting thing is, Does reality really depend on an individual's "heart and mind"?

I suppose that a given individual's "reality" does depend on their age, psychological makeup, and so forth, but what about the larger, the supposedly objective reality? If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one to hear it fall, does it still make a noise?

I find it fascinating how intelligent people can so sharply differ in their perceptions of the same set of facts. This – or any other – board offers numerous examples, not only political, but market-related as well.

I think there must be some sort of a difference in the "critical pathing" along the way as we process information. As related to the Iraqi situation, for example, for some the image of death and destruction is so revolting that it overwhelms all other contexts. For others, the larger picture tends to dominate, and they are more prepared to accept the (presumably limited) violence now in order to secure (broader) stability in the future.

All this is not to say that the second group is necessarily always wiser and more correct. Realty is too complex, no one can always foresee correctly how the many variables will eventually play out... but some of us try. And... all of us... should try, for in the end, our children's children will have to live with the results of our choices.

"hegemony" - that is what it is all about.
The US is #1.
They know it.
They don't like it.
They all want to be #1.

They can't get past it.

JMHO
