Actually, they have too many leaders, each teaching their own "flavor" of Islam with different areas of emphasis.. There is no traditional heirarchy of leadership, but rather various groups of "scholars" advocating specific interpretations of the Koran..

But the militant and intolerant Wahhabists have been gaining predominance, fueled by Saudi oil wealth.. The "quid pro quo" that permits the Saudis to rule, while the Wahhabists dominate Islam..

But if the more moderate muslims remain intimidated, or afraid that Saudi monetary donations dry up, then the Wahhabists essentially are free to continue to "call the tune" with impunity..

And that's why some have advocated throwing out the Saudis from the Islamic holy sites and restoring the Hashemites to control Mecca and Medina.
