>The point is this is no Afghanistan. You have middle class people with an infrastructure in place and a ready source of wealth, and in fact, one with reasonable self defense capability. There is no reason for us to occupy this place for an extended period of time -- just long enough to get them on the way to developing a new government.

The people are considerably poorer than they were 15 years ago, unfortunately. Granted, they are still much better off than Afghanistan. However, the new government is going to need to be policed for a long time after they're installed. I just can't see them being noncorrupt, fiscally responible and much better than Saddam in the human rights category if we're not looking over their shoulder every step of the way. In fact, I'm not even sure we can accomplish that if we do keep control, but it improves our odds. Liberal democracy is not in these people's blood... "Nurse, give me three pints of type-democracy positive, stet." They need a transfusion.

I hope not, I for one find these occupations useful and can foresee them remaining useful for a pretty long time. Your sentiments echo the Bush campaign foreign policy promises, which I always thought unrealistic.

The 3-6 month figure was tossed out in response to a question concerning the length of the military presence.

The point is this is no Afghanistan. You have middle class people with an infrastructure in place and a ready source of wealth, and in fact, one with reasonable self defense capability. There is no reason for us to occupy this place for an extended period of time -- just long enough to get them on the way to developing a new government.

I think the time when American military occupies foriegn countries for decades upon decades may be coming to an end. I would not be surprised to see a drawdown in Europe and in South Korea once these incidents are behind us.

You're a pompous idiot who doesn't have a clue. To think you actually garnered some credibility on this thread. Another red voter spouting off on stuff about which he knows little.
