His attitude is better than I feared and I think, if we can get one of those small portable containers, he just might not give up or refuse to get out of the house.

I hope that works for him. I just went through something similar with my father. He was having some plumbing problems and he was saddled with a catheter and a bag on his knee. Concurrently, his ankles and feet became very swollen. To deal with the swelling he was supposed to put his feet up but he couldn't do that because of backflow from the bag. Plus he couldn't sleep because he had to empty the bag several times a night. This happened while I was visiting so I suggested we extend the tubing at night to run to a container on the floor so he could both put his feet up and not have to empty the bag so often. I bought the tubing but it took about three weeks to get him to even try it.

The good news is that now, finally, three months later the catheter is out.

I don't think that the medical system deals well with how depressing treatment can be for the elderly.
