When you continually face criticism for your policies, the blame game [as in blame it on jealousy i.e.] becomes suspect. I really don't believe jealousy motivates the Germans right now. If that's not true, then what is their true motivation?

They just aren't comfortable that there's one real power and it's not them.

Z, I don't think that's it. Germany has had nearly 60 years to accept that is not a military superpower. Besides, military anything disturbs them.

What I think is their motivation is that they have grown uncomfortable with the US becoming the sole superpower. Under Clinton, the US carried on much as had before 1990 and Europe and Germany was okay with that. Under Bush, the appearance of the US has taken on an ominous cast. Most of the world can't do much about it but Germany can. By linking the EU with Russia, Europe begins to approximate, if not a superpower, one that needs to be respected and consulted.
