You're right. I would not advocate a federally-prescribed daily diet (North Korea is doing that, and the people starve...).
But at least (and even if it is anti-liberal) the govt. could steer the production of less harmful diet by setting incentives and taxes. And, of course, the cost of being obese shall be much more internalised and put back to the individual (like smoking or car driving).

I agree that dropping bombs is a much different thing.
For that case, it is still a matter of politics, lobbying and ultimately, a govt. decision to encourage production of war material over civil goods, or not. Nuff said...
