Regarding access to classified information, we had access to the communications between the embassy/USAID offices and Washington, which included a lot of classified material. In addition, I discussed these matters at length with several foreign service officers who were in a position to know, as well as retired advisors, including Ben Cohen (advisor to F.D.R.), who was opposed to the Viet Nam war from the beginning. I can assure you that the information I had access to was high quality, and the sources were reliable.

There's a lot of stuff that goes on in government, which most people don't know about until years later, if ever.
