Mel Gibson played a man who resisted the war, but when push came to shove he formed a militia unit composed of people using their own muskets. The second amendment to the constitution states: "A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Our constitution therefore guarantees the natural right of self-defense and ensures that when it becomes necessary to form a militia like Gibson portrayed in the movie, the citizens will have their own firearms.

That's the connection. I expect I will now be treated to a barrage of diatribes from TigerPaw and all the rest who claim that "the people" means "the militia" and that the Second Amendment doesn't really grant the right to keep and bear arms to "the people." He's wrong, but no amount of argument will convince him otherwise.
