In his remarks, Listwin outlined Openwave's vision for increasing mobile data usage through a new industry model and challenged the industry to build differentiated services based on a user-centric approach. As a result, mobile operators can build brand value, differentiated services and increase revenues.

Highlights of Listwin's comments include: -- Mobile data business models are shifting from per minute usage fees to transaction-based billing. Operators today have the opportunity to create new revenue streams through voice, data transactions and community-based business models. -- He noted that for the first time, the technology drivers are coming together in critical mass -- networks, devices and applications are increasing in numbers and usage, moving mobile data from Japan to the rest of the world. A year over year comparison shows a significant increase in all three drivers from December 2001 to December 2002, with the number of color handsets growing six-fold; number of 2.5 G network subscribers increasing by 480 percent; and the number of 2.5G networks almost doubling to 175. -- For the user phones now have sufficient power and technology to enable carriers to extend their brand by creating differentiated services that stand out. -- In the infrastructure layer, Listwin noted that new technology advancements such as location services are giving carriers the opportunity to inject intelligence into the network. -- Noting the importance of applications, Listwin challenged the industry to provide a single, integrated experience for text, multimedia and voice messaging. He highlighted the new Openwave Mobile Developer Toolkit to make it easier for developers to write advanced mobile data applications using a mobile web services framework. -- Listwin also challenged the industry to remain committed to open standards, such as xHTML, WAP 2.0 and OMA, as key to bringing advanced mobile data services quickly and efficiently to market while enabling further customization and differentiation of services to create new revenue streams for mobile operators.
