My opinion is exactly the opposite!

I think it's "one-upmanship" which creates breakthroughs, creates new killer applications and advances our industry!

Examples are:

1. DoCoMo rejected the "common technology standard" of WAP and developed i-mode in a display of "one-upmanship". eurotechnology.com

2. J-Phone rejected the "common technology standard" of mobile phones without cameras and introduced shamail = mobile phones with digital cameras. It's another example of "one-upmanship" creating a new killer application. eurotechnology.com

Had J-Phone rejected "one-upmanship", J-Phone would have rejected cameraphones, and this important advance of our industry might have been retarded by a couple of years.

Just my 2 cents.
