"It seems that the reasons to commit US troops are based upon a false dichotomy. Either we alone bomb him or we endorse him."

I do not see a false dichotomy. Either we remove him while the opportunity has presented itself, or we are powerless to act or comment on future heinous actions he perpetrates.

"I'd be working like mad to fix the process by which governments change. If we want to get rid of regimes that harm people, then we might have to look at our long list of friends in various military dictatorships we've befriended for expediency over the years, including Turkey.

Well???

"I'd start with the number one cause of death in the world and it isn't Iraq. It is poverty and ignorance. Declare war on that, and we're well on our way. Second we should start saying things that are true and defensible. Third we should be seeking consensus through legitimate forms of collective government when and where they exist. Fourth, we should recognize that unregulated business as our only visible ambassador to the Third World has been a mistake."

Ah, the old..."If I was in charge 'round here, things'd be different." Wll you are not. Until you are we have no way of knowing if you would do a bloody thing. When you are not in charge and your tiny sphere of influence to act is called on (support for the current actions), you are found lacking the gumption. Sorry if that sounds harsh but I have known to many people in my life who had all kinds of ideas of what the leadership should be like...Mostly pipe smokers.
