We think if we depose a strong-arm dictator that the situation will naturally evolve into a more democratic government where human rights are upheld and differences tolerated.

Freedom and democracy are joined at the hip. If they are to get true freedom, some elements of democracy are going to be necessary.

The people of Iraq are DYING to be saved by the United States. I just saw an interview with the Iraqi girl who emailed Tony Blair (concerning the murder of her 17 family members by Saddam). She was, rightfully, confused about the US plans for Iraq.

She felt there was no question we are coming after the oil. But she says the Iraqi people don't care, because they don't have the oil now - Saddam has it. She says the Americans betrayed Iraq in '91 because the people rose up against Saddam and we walked away (nobody corrected her and explained that the US didn't abandon them, that instead the UN did).

The Iraqi people want freedom, and freedom requires some degree of democracy. The Iraqi people would be in favor of the United States action if only they believed it would occur.

>That's the problem: the U.S. views the middle east and other world problems in simplistic terms. We think if we depose a strong-arm dictator that the situation will naturally evolve into a more democratic government where human rights are upheld and differences tolerated.

Well, at least I'm not under the illusion that it'd "naturally" happen. It'll take a ton of work... but in order to do it, a shakeup is definitely necessary.

I just hope our government understands this.
