If an opinion poll had been taken on 9/10, how many Americans would have favored a preemptive strike against Iraq? Could Bush have been appointed warlord? Would there have been any foreign support for the UN resolution? My guesses would be 5%, no and no.

The WTC was the kind of Pearl Harbor type event that turns dumb, fat and happy Americans into warriors. It sounds terrible to label something so grim a publicity stunt, but for lack of a better term, and in light of events before and after the fact, my theory is the event had as its sole purpose the intent to change a lot of people's minds. The WTC designated jets were intended to complete their mission, while the other two had some kind of damage control strategy (fail safes?) in place to prevent their success. bin Laden was being held incommunicado at the time, and would not have been in a position to prevent someone else from taking control of his people.

On the topic of planting bombs in grave yards, the idea strikes me as being almost as silly as the idea of a caravan of Winnebagos traveling the highways and byways of Baghdad while mad scientists pump out thousands of pounds of the deadliest toxins known to man without dropping anything. Wouldn't folks kind of wonder about all the military activity taking place every time they go to visit their dearly departed Aunt Nellie? If you were going to purchase a hand gun for self defense, would you bury it in the back yard or keep it someplace where you had access to it? And what happens if you hit the trigger with your shovel when you dig it back up?

On your point regarding releasing toxins as a result of blowing them up, you might have something. Some of the items I've read point out there was no evidence of there being anything at the sites where they were "supposed" to be, although that doesn't eliminate the possibility of unarmed warheads, etc. being destroyed. So I'll think harder as you suggest. What if there were an underground facility in existence prior to the first invasion that had been detected by satellite? Could the contents have been raided in the confusion by our own side? What would be the value of those kind of items on the black market?

Who knows? Maybe there's a fresh batch of cookies in the "secret" cookie jar that little Bush wants to nab as icing on the cake. It might explain why little Bush doesn't want the UN to find the stuff, and why Saddam isn't real gung ho about telling everyone about losing the first batch, or tipping anyone off about where another batch might be hidden in the same place.
