<<A pretty good segment of the public in the United States takes much the same view of the Iraq question as the French government does, as do a good many members of congress.>>

A "pretty good segment of the public" in the US can't find the US on a map! And your point is.....?

The French Gov't is at issue here not the French people. Their lack of coopertive actions towerds the USA over the last 50 years are all NOTED. The French Govt is no friend of America unless it comes to exporting cheese and wine, and Airplanes. I love Paris, I am no particular fan of most the French people from my personal experience. I do however have some very good French assosiates. I happen to like Germans alot more then the french, and the Belgium are wonderfull IMHO. However the issue here is your comments about what a great dynamic society the French have built. I would make two points. 1)How much would have been possible without American rebuilding of Europe? 2)How much did the French citezenry benifit from the US Umbrella against USSSR?
4)How much of their economic strength isnt based on the US Consumer, and huge trade imbalances France was allowed to carry for decades?

The french have a great socialist society, but it would have been impossible to create without PAX AMERICANA.
